On Friday, 19 May, the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) Zone 1 will embark on a peaceful service delivery march in Orange Farm to raise concerns about a number of issues in the area.
SANCO Zone 1 will be joined by all Orange Farm SANCO branches and supported by the region and province.
Ward 3 SANCO chairperson, Thamsanqa Tshaka listed the following reasons for the march:
- Eyethu Mall employs many outsiders as opposed to local people. SANCO demands 70% local people and 30% outsiders
- The end of abuse of employees at the mall by the their employers
- The security company at the mall is owned by foreign nationals – while so many locals have security companies. Local Economy For Locals
- Expansion for Link Road to ease traffic
- A need to constantly maintain local clinics and construction of a hospital in Orange Farm as the population has grown to more than a million
- The proper and functional EMS that reaches out to the community and delivers proper services
- A return for housing offices free of corruption. Investigation into residents allocated at Savanna City
- Formalisation of informal settlements. Our people deserve developed places than living in squalor
- A fully functional home affairs that is able to issue identity documents for Orange Farm residents
- The completion of RDP houses that were left incomplete by the housing department
“The march will start at 9am at the Ext 2 Taxi Rank and at Trusnard Ext 7b Junction, with marchers meeting at Eyethu Mall before proceeding to the Orange Farms Police Station. We have prepared memorandums to submit to the mall management and representatives of institutions at the police station. We invite residents to come and join us, the time is now – ke nako!
