On Friday, 24 January, police officers in Lakeside Ext 5, conducted a High-Density Crime Prevention Operation that led to the arrest of two suspects for possession of illegal firearms.
During routine Vehicle Check Points (VCP), officers noticed a suspicious vehicle with two occupants. The vehicle was stopped and a search revealed two illegal firearms – a hunting rifle and a Fly Wheel .38 Special – along with live ammunition.
Sergeant Motsapi, commenting on the arrest, said: “The removal of illegal firearms from our streets remains our top priority. Such weapons are often used to commit serious crimes and this operation is a clear demonstration of our commitment to community safety.”
Orange Farms SAPS Station Commander, Brigadier MJ Manamela applauded the officers’ efforts, stating: “The team did a great job. Their hard work has once again yielded positive results. The prevalence of illegal firearms in the Orange Farms precinct is concerning, but with operations like this, we are making progress in addressing the issue.”
The suspects are set to appear in the Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.
