“Change is not just possible for the girl child – it is necessary,” declared Mam Lindi Dhlamini, founder of Zenzeleni Children and Youth Village Arts and Agriculture, at the impactful Girl Child Initiative sanitary pad handout held on 29 March at Lesedi la Kreste Anglican Primary School in Ext 8a.
The event shed light on a staggering truth – 80% of young girls miss school due to a lack of access to sanitary pads, a struggle widely referred to as “pad poverty.” In response, Zenzeleni, in partnership with Gift of the Givers and other donors, took bold action, reaching out to over 500 girls aged 10 to 21 with a generous distribution of #TRUST sanitary pads. In addition, they facilitated sessions covering vital topics such as sisterhood, STI and HIV/AIDS prevention and bullying awareness.
Local talents including Amatshitshi, DJ REjazzsa and dancers brought vibrant energy to the day, creating a joyful, empowering atmosphere.
“We are grateful to our potential investors, our volunteers and every young lady who came through,” said Dhlamini.
Zenzeleni Children and Youth Village continues to be a beacon of hope, offering a range of life-changing services, including:
