Orange Farms climbs into SA’s top 30 contact-crime stations

Orange Farms has emerged as one of South Africa’s highest-ranked police stations for contact crime, with newly released SAPS statistics showing a further increase in offences committed against people during the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year.

According to the SAPS quarterly crime statistics covering April to June 2026, Orange Farms recorded 588 contact crimes, up from 546 during the same three-month period in 2025. This represents an increase of 42 cases, or 7.7%.

The figure places Orange Farms 24th nationally among the country’s top 30 police stations for contact crime and ninth in Gauteng. The category covers serious crimes against a person, including murder, attempted murder, sexual offences, assault, robbery and aggravated robbery.

The latest figures also point to a worrying longer-term trend in the community. Orange Farms recorded 415 contact crimes between April and June 2022, followed by 439 in 2023 and 535 in 2024. The number increased again to 546 in 2025 before reaching 588 this year.

This means contact crime recorded at the station has increased by about 42% in four years, from 415 cases in the first quarter of 2022 to 588 during the corresponding period in 2026.

The Orange Farms trend stands in contrast to the broader picture in Gauteng. Province-wide, contact crimes declined from 38,296 between April and June 2025 to 37,161 during the same period this year — a decrease of 3%.

Despite Gauteng recording an overall decline, the province continues to carry a significant share of the country’s violent crime burden. It accounted for 37,161 of the 142,112 contact crimes recorded nationally during the quarter, or 26.1%.

The national statistics show mixed movement across individual crime categories. Murder decreased by 5.9% nationally and aggravated robbery fell by 14.7%, while attempted murder increased by 8.7%, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm rose by 2.5% and common assault increased by 2%.

The latest ranking puts renewed focus on violent crime in Orange Farm, particularly as the station’s contact-crime figures have risen steadily over several years while the province as a whole recorded a decline.

The statistics form part of SAPS’s police-recorded crime figures for the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year, covering April to June 2026.
