The Johannesburg Zoo hosted its annual Arbor Day Celebration on 5 September under the theme “Greening our Communities.” The event brought together learners from Orange Farm School and four other schools, along with a wide network of environmental partners and stakeholders, to emphasize the importance of trees, biodiversity, and sustainable living.
Held at the Zoo’s Band Stand, the celebration featured tree planting, exhibitions, and interactive educational sessions. Learners and community members had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in conservation while being encouraged to become ambassadors for greener, healthier spaces.
Key partners supporting the event included the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens, Grow a Tree, Fibre Cycle, EISD, Miss Earth South Africa, Samy Fitness, Deepwater, WESSA, GDARD, Trees for Africa, DFFE, and South African Restoration Fruit. Their collaboration reflects a united effort to restore ecosystems, reduce environmental impact, and promote sustainability at both local and national levels.
“Arbor Day is not just about planting trees; it’s about planting the seeds of responsibility, knowledge, and hope in our communities. We are grateful to all our partners, schools, and stakeholders who are making this year’s celebration meaningful and impactful,” said a Johannesburg Zoo spokesperson, Jenny Moodley.
Through these partnerships with schools and civic organizations, the Johannesburg Zoo continues to champion environmental education and community engagement, ensuring that Arbor Day is not only a day of celebration but also a catalyst for lasting change.
