A 54-year-old woman died and five other people were injured when an Orange Farm-bound minibus taxi overturned on Lenasia Drive in Lenasia on Saturday, 30 May. Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to the crash at about 6:15pm, near the Ice Cream Factory.
According to preliminary information from the JMPD, the white Foton minibus was travelling south, heading towards Orange Farm, when it was allegedly clipped by another vehicle travelling north with a trailer. The other vehicle reportedly struck the minibus on the right front fender. The minibus driver then swerved towards the western side of the road, causing the vehicle to overturn.
Emergency services found several occupants needing medical help. A 54-year-old female passenger was declared dead at the scene. Her body was taken to Diepkloof State Mortuary. One male passenger sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Saberie Chisty Clinic in Lenasia. The driver and three other passengers – one man and two women – sustained slight injuries. They were also taken to Saberie Chisty Clinic for treatment.
A culpable homicide docket has been opened and the case will be investigated by the Lenasia SAPS.
JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla urged motorists to remain alert on the roads.
“We urge all motorists to remain vigilant and maintain a safe following distance, especially during evening hours. Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased during this difficult time,” Fihla said.
