A candlelight vigil at the Boitumelo Stop Sign on 6 April marked what would have been Ntando Ngozo’s 18th birthday, as community members intensified calls for answers and legislative reform following his disappearance.

Community activist Thomas Goreseb-Maseko, speaking on behalf of the Ngozo family, said the vigil symbolised both remembrance and a firm demand for accountability.

Earlier, Maseko confirmed he had contacted Acting Gauteng Police Commissioner, Major General Khumalo, requesting an urgent and detailed progress report on the investigation, including interventions by the provincial office.

The gathering also spotlighted growing concern over systemic failures and legislative gaps in the Customary Initiation Act of 2021. A formal submission to Parliament is calling for urgent amendments to ensure protection for individuals participating in culturally recognised roles at initiation schools.

“Ntando’s presence was culturally legitimate, yet legally invisible,” the submission states.

Search efforts by SAPS and community groups remain ongoing, but frustration is mounting over the lack of meaningful updates.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Investigating Officer Captain CJV Van Der Merwe at 082 822 7629 or 016 450 2111.
