Residents from the Mokokotlong informal settlement in Orange Farm staged an early morning service delivery protest on Wednesday, 9 March 2026, blocking parts of the Golden Highway near the Welgevonden Road intersection.
The protest began at approximately 04:30am when community members gathered and blocked the road to voice concerns about ongoing service delivery challenges in the area. Residents say they are frustrated by poor road conditions and electricity-related issues that have remained unresolved.
An estimated 200 residents participated in the protest, causing temporary traffic disruptions along the busy route linking Orange Farm and surrounding areas.
Public Order Police were deployed to monitor the situation and ensure the gathering remained peaceful. Traffic was diverted away from the protest area to prevent confrontation and ensure the safety of both motorists and protesters.
Corporate Communications Officer for Orange Farms SAPS, Sgt Shaan Jason Motsapi, said: “Public Order Police were deployed to the protest to monitor the situation. Approximately 200 community members participated in the gathering. Traffic was diverted to avoid confrontation and relevant stakeholders were present to address the matter.”
The protest concluded without any incidents, Motsapi added: “No incidents were reported and the protesters dispersed peacefully.”
Residents hope their concerns around road infrastructure and electricity access will receive urgent attention from the relevant authorities.
