As part of Child Protection Week activities, 36 learners and 10 educators from Bethesda Christian Academy were hosted by Meyerton SAPS for an educational and eye-opening tour of the local police station.
The visit, supported by Siyabangena Patrollers, aimed to raise awareness among learners about the consequences of criminal behaviour and the importance of making the right choices early in life. Officers cautioned learners against bullying and stealing, explaining how such actions often begin at school and if not corrected, could lead to serious criminal behaviour in adulthood – even imprisonment.
The learners toured various parts of the station, including the Client Service Centre, Detective Offices, prisoner kitchen and the holding cells, where suspects await court appearances. The learners were curious about what kind of food suspects eat and how they spend their time in custody.
To make the visit memorable, learners had their fingerprints taken as a souvenir and were thrilled to experience the sound of a police vehicle siren – a highlight of the day. Mrs Maseko, principal of the academy, thanked Meyerton SAPS management for giving the learners a first-hand look at the police environment.
“This was not just a tour – it was a life lesson. The learners have seen where bad choices can lead, and we hope they’ll think twice before making them,” she said.
The visit forms part of the national Child Protection Week, which promotes the safety and well-being of children across the country. Role players: Meyerton SAPS and Siyabangena Patrol.
