Messi Academy has grown into one of the steadily developing youth football structures in its community, evolving from a single junior team into a multi-division academy competing across several age groups.
Founded in 2020, the academy began with only an Under-11 division. At the time, it operated as a small setup focused on developing basic football skills, discipline, and teamwork among young players.

“We started with just one group, the Under-11s, and the goal was simply to develop talent from the ground up,” said coach Mokete Mosoeu.
Over the years, the academy has expanded significantly and now includes Under-11, Under-13, Under-15, and Under-17 divisions. The Under-17 side is particularly significant, as it features some of the original players who joined the academy when it first launched.
The academy’s growth has also been matched by success on the field. Last year, Messi Academy won the Afrika Tikkun Champions League titles in both the Under-11 and Under-15 divisions. The team also lifted the Iyavutha Cup LFA League trophy, further strengthening its reputation in local youth football.
The academy’s “first team,” responsible for travelling and competing in away fixtures, was officially introduced in 2022. Since then, the squad has gained valuable experience competing against stronger opposition outside its home base.
One of the team’s standout achievements came when they secured second place at the Champ of Champ Finals held in Meyerton.

“That result showed us that we can compete with the best when we fully commit ourselves,” Mosoeu added.
Although the academy did not qualify for this year’s Champ of Champ tournament, the decision was linked to the competition selecting only the top eight teams in advance, with qualification already concluded before the academy’s latest results could be considered.
Despite the setback, Messi Academy remains focused on development, consistency, and creating opportunities for young players to progress in football.
“Our aim is not just to win, but to build players who can grow and reach higher levels of the game,” the academy leadership said.
With its rapid growth, competitive achievements, and expanding youth structure, Messi Academy is steadily positioning itself as a rising force in grassroots football development.
