Young learners in Orange Farm were given an early glimpse into the world of work when Lusemanzi ECD held its Career Day in Ext 7b on 29 August.
The event brought representatives from Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the health sector, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) and South African Police Service (SAPS) closer to the children, giving them an opportunity to learn about different professions and the important roles these services play in communities.
Rather than limiting career awareness to older learners, the initiative introduced children at ECD level to professions they see around them and encouraged them to begin thinking about their aspirations from a young age.
The day also included important safety lessons. EMS community educator Officer Mphonyana Makau encouraged the children not to play with matches or anything involving fire, warning that fires can cause serious injuries and damage to the surrounding environment.
“Children should not play with matches or anything that can start a fire, as they can burn themselves and cause damage to the environment,” Makau explained.
Lusemanzi ECD founder and principal Lorato Duma thanked the participating organisations for taking time to engage and educate the learners.
“Having EMS, Health, JMPD and SAPS with us gave our children an opportunity to learn directly from the people serving their community. We appreciate their presence and the knowledge they shared with our learners,” said Duma.
The Career Day also provided an opportunity for learners to interact with professionals beyond the classroom, helping make conversations about careers, community service and personal safety more practical and engaging.
Through initiatives such as Career Day, Lusemanzi ECD hopes to broaden young children’s understanding of the opportunities available to them while encouraging curiosity about the world around them.
