Tshaba Tsohle Initiation and Tradition (TTIT) organisation, based in Orange Farm, is committed to restoring dignity and pride in traditional practices.
Guided by the Customary Initiation Act 2 of 2021, TTIT outlines critical steps for parents, practitioners and communities to ensure safe and legitimate initiation processes.
Key guidelines for parents
1. Choosing the Right School: Research schools through local municipalities, CoGTA announcements, or TTIT communications. Verify that principals and initiation schools hold valid permits.
2. Preparations: Discuss readiness with the family.Complete consent forms and ensure medical check – ups are done by certified professionals.
3. Health and Safety: Medical assessments are mandatory. Emergency healthcare services, including mobile clinics, are available. Initiates are guaranteed healthy food, clean water and safe environments.
Combatting abductions and unlawful practices
TTIT emphasises that children cannot be taken to initiation schools without parental consent. Such actions are considered abductions and must be reported to authorities immediately.
Parental Support and Monitoring
Parents are encouraged to appoint family representatives to stay updated on their child’s progress. TTIT’s monitoring team and youth committee are actively involved in fieldwork to address concerns and inform communities.
Encouraging responsible participation
TTIT urges families to remain vigilant, respect cultural practices and educate their children to avoid peer pressure that may lead to unsafe or unauthorised participation. By following these measures, TTIT aims to protect and preserve the integrity of customary initiation traditions while ensuring the safety and well-being of initiates.
