The spirit of football and community came alive on 9 November as the Greater South Masters Football League officially launched at Ext 1 Park Soccer Ground.
The newly formed league features 16 teams, made up of players aged 34 and above, representing areas across Region G – including Orange Farm, Lawley, Majazane, and Migson Manor, among others.
League chairperson, Ben Mbongwane, said the initiative goes beyond the love of the game. “The aim of this league is to inspire young boys to play soccer and to keep them off the streets, away from drugs and crime,” Mbongwane told Orange Farm News.
He explained that the league plans to host regular matches and tournaments, with a vision to affiliate with SAFA in the near future. “We want to use this platform to empower young boys and give back to our communities. Each team is expected to adopt a U14 team, mentor it, and support its growth,” he added.
The league also has a strong social responsibility mission – identifying families in need, donating essentials, and helping talented young players from disadvantaged backgrounds.
“Many boys have a passion for soccer, but their families can’t afford boots or training gear. It’s up to us to step in and make sure no child gives up on their dream. A child on the soccer field is a child out of court,” Mbongwane said.
He called on local sponsors and community members to rally behind the initiative. “Together, we can create safer and better communities through the power of sport,” he concluded.
