A tragic accident occurred at Aha Thuto Secondary School on Thursday, 12 February, leaving a Grade 9 learner injured and prompting swift intervention from education authorities.
The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) confirmed the incident and stated that the parents of the learner were immediately contacted. The injured learner was taken to a nearby clinic for medical attention and was later discharged.
The alleged perpetrator has since been placed on suspension, with the suspension letter served to the parent on Friday, 13 February. Disciplinary proceedings led by the school’s Disciplinary Committee are scheduled to commence on 24 February, where an appropriate sanction will be recommended.
GDE spokesperson, Steve Mabona, condemned the incident and emphasised the department’s commitment to maintaining discipline in schools.
“We strongly condemn any acts of misconduct which seek to undermine the dignity of our learning institutions. Schools are urged to enforce their codes of conduct to deal with disciplinary matters. The Department continues to appeal to parents to work closely with schools to instill discipline and respect among learners,” said Mabona.
The department further confirmed that its Psycho-Social Support team was dispatched to the school to provide counselling and support to affected learners and staff.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring that schools remain safe environments conducive to teaching and learning.
