Drieziek 5 Men’s Forum stands firm against crime and GBV, leading the charge for community safety
Committed to safety and empowerment, Men’s Forum members are reshaping Drieziek 5 into a community where everyone feels protected and supported.

In 2022, a group of men in Drieziek 5 came together with a common purpose: to combat crime and create a safer community.

Initially, the group started with just eight members, working on a neighbourhood watch to protect local residents. Although some in the community welcomed the idea, others were uncertain about how effective it would be.

As word spread, the group grew in size and strength. In July 2023, however, tragedy struck when one of their members, a taxi owner from the Orange Farm United Taxi Association (OFUTA), was fatally shot in front of his family. This painful loss galvanised the group, which soon became known as the Men’s Forum.

The Men’s Forum has outlined clear objectives. Its core mission is to make Drieziek 5 a safer place, with a strong focus on protecting women and children from gender-based violence (GBV). The group also recognises the importance of shaping the next generation by mentoring young boys to respect women and girls, hoping this approach will foster lifelong respect and positive relationships.

The Men’s Forum acknowledges that men often face challenges too and has identified a need for support in their own lives. They are actively seeking opportunities for men to receive both financial and emotional support, recognising that when men are empowered, they are better able to contribute to the wellbeing of the community.

In terms of safety, the forum has taken proactive measures, installing boom gates at various entry points in the area. This added security, which was completed with input from residents and collaboration with Ward 5 Councillor Mxolisi, will be finalised soon.

“We’re proud of what we’ve achieved so far and thankful for the community’s support,” said Men’s Forum Chairman Lebohang Metsing.
