On 21 March, residents of Mountain View Extension came together to clean a local soccer field, creating a safer space for children to play and stay active.
The community-led initiative drew a strong turnout of parents and volunteers from across Ward 6, all working side by side to restore the neglected ground. Their shared goal was to provide young people with a positive environment, away from the risks of street life, substance abuse, and crime.
Community leader Jabu Botman told OFN: “I am so happy with what I witnessed today with my own eyes. The love that parents showed their children left me speechless. We came for the initiative of cleaning one of the sports fields at Mountain View Extension, and the turnout was amazing.”
He added: “People came in their numbers to help, irrespective of the distance. Today, the dream of our children will come true because of your support. You are true parents to our children.”
Botman highlighted the role of both men and women in the initiative, noting their leadership and dedication. He encouraged continued responsibility among parents: “Before we play the blame game, let’s ask ourselves what we as parents have done for our kids so that we can remove them from the streets, alcohol, and drug abuse.”
