On Saturday, 16 November, the City of Johannesburg wrapped up its Community-Based Planning (CBP) meetings.
The Speaker of Council, Cllr Nobuhle Mthembu, joined residents from Wards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 131 in Orange Farm for the final session. This platform gave residents the opportunity to table their service delivery priorities by ward. The inputs gathered will shape the City’s Business Plan and Integrated Development Plan (IDP) as we approach the new financial year.
Key Issues Raised:
Education Infrastructure : Drieziek residents urgently called for new schools to address the growing population in the area.
Stormwater & Sewer Systems : A recurring issue across all wards, residents highlighted the flooding and related challenges caused by inadequate infrastructure, especially during the rainy season.
Ward 4 Councillor, Cllr Simon Molefe, also took the Speaker on a walkabout to demonstrate the pressing stormwater and sewer problems in his ward. He emphasised the need for urgent intervention to alleviate these longstanding issues.
Cllr Mthembu applauded residents for their participation and encouraged them to remain engaged in these critical discussions. “I am happy to see you all here today. It’s vital for residents to hold councillors and the executive accountable. These meetings must not just be talk shows-they must lead to tangible service delivery results,” she said.
