To commemorate Child Protection Week, Sedibeng District law enforcement members held an event on Tuesday, 4 June, at Madume Primary School. The purpose was to educate learners about the implications of bullying and inform them about their rights and other important topics. This significant event was a part of the Orange Farms SAPS Child Protection Week.
The school hosted a talk by Adopt-a-Cop Sector Managers, Social Crime Prevention Coordinators, Domestic Violence Coordinators and Gauteng Traffic Wardens (GTWs).
“The event aimed to educate approximately 100 school children about the dangers of bullying. Students were informed that bullying is a serious misconduct, a violation of the school code of conduct and a breach of human rights, which can escalate into criminal offenses,” Orange Farm, SAPS communication officer, Sgt Shaan Motsapi.
The speakers emphasized that perpetrators of bullying often progress to more severe behaviors, potentially leading to arrest and imprisonment. In addition to addressing bullying, the students were also taught about the importance of self-control, discipline and abstaining from underage drug and alcohol use.
Learners were also discouraged from attending illegal initiation schools, particularly as the winter school recess approaches.
