Choosing the right college is a crucial decision that can shape your academic and career future. Unfortunately, some institutions operate without proper accreditation or registration, leaving students with unrecognised qualifications.

Here’s how you can ensure your chosen college meets credible standards:

1. Verify college registration

Ensure the college is registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). Visit the DHET website or contact them directly to confirm the institution’s registration number. Avoid colleges with vague accreditation claims.

2. Check for Accreditation

Confirm that the courses offered are accredited by relevant authorities, such as SAQA or SETA. Accredited courses ensure that your qualification is recognised by employers and institutions.

3. Compare fees and hidden costs

Request a detailed fee structure, covering tuition, registration, study materials, and exam fees. Be wary of colleges demanding large upfront payments without providing clear receipts or contracts.

4. Inspect facilities and resources

Visit the campus, if possible, to evaluate its facilities, including libraries, labs, and study spaces. Ensure the college has adequate resources to support your learning.5.

Investigate reputation and reviews

Speak to current or former students about their experiences. Check online platforms like HelloPeter for reviews or complaints to gauge the college’s reputation.

6. Explore career services

Find out if the college offers career guidance, internships, or assistance with job placement. A good institution invests in helping students transition into the workforce.

7. Review the curriculum

Ensure the course content aligns with your career goals and provides practical skills. Confirm that the qualification is recognised and valued by employers or other educational institutions.

8. Consider flexibility

If you have work or personal commitments, check whether the college offers flexible schedules, including exam dates and deadlines.

9. Beware of Scams

Avoid colleges promising guaranteed jobs or unrealistic qualifications in a short time. Flashy marketing without evidence of quality education is a red flag.

10. Seek financial aid information

Ask about bursaries, scholarships, or payment plans. If applicable, check if the college is approved for external funding options, such as NSFAS.

By carefully evaluating your options and verifying essential details, you can choose a college that effectively supports your academic and career aspirations.

To verify if an institution is registered, call the DHET on 0800 87 2222.
