A 34-year-old man is expected to appear in the Vereeniging Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 30 October, following his arrest in Evaton after police recovered a South African Police Service (SAPS) firearm and uniform believed to have been stolen.
According to Gauteng police, the arrest followed an intelligence-driven operation after officers received information from an informant on Monday, 26 October, about a man allegedly in possession of an unlicensed firearm and SAPS uniform. The items were reportedly stolen during a housebreaking incident in Sebokeng Zone 7 over the weekend.
Information was shared with the Sedibeng Roving Team, Sedibeng K9 Unit and Gauteng Provincial Traffic Highway Patrol and Crime Intelligence (GTP HPCIA) members, who assisted in carrying out a tactical operation on Wednesday, 28 October. The suspect was arrested at his residence in Evaton, where police recovered a SAPS-issued Beretta pistol with a magazine containing seven rounds of ammunition.
Officers also seized a SAPS uniform, handcuffs, a suspected stolen sound bar and a 32-inch smart television. Police said investigations are continuing. The Gauteng police provincial office confirmed the arrest in a media statement issued on Thursday, 29 October.
