Three administration clerks at a local Orange Farm clinic have been arrested after allegedly selling medication taken from the facility’s dispensary.
Orange Farms SAPS said police were called to the clinic at about 15:00 on Thursday, August 27, following a complaint about missing medication.
According to a statement issued on behalf of Orange Farms SAPS Station Commander Brigadier MJ Manamela, officers were informed that medication had disappeared from the dispensary room.
The matter reportedly came to light after security guards at the clinic stopped a person leaving the premises and allegedly found the missing medication in their possession.
Police investigations then allegedly linked three administration clerks to the medication.
“It is alleged that the individual paid one of the administration clerks R500 for medication reportedly used for the termination of pregnancy,” police said.
The three employees were arrested and detained at Orange Farm Police Station on charges of theft of medication.
They are expected to appear in the Vereeniging Magistrates’ Court soon.
The case has raised concern about the alleged diversion of medication from a public healthcare facility, particularly where medicines intended for patients may have been sold unlawfully.
Orange Farms SAPS spokesperson Sgt SJ Motsapi confirmed that investigations into the matter are continuing.
