A 23-year-old man accused in a collision that killed 14 learners has been granted R3,000 bail by the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court. Ayanda Dludla faces 14 counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder, as well as charges related to allegedly operating a motor vehicle without a certificate of fitness, driving without a professional driving permit (PrDP) and operating an unlicensed vehicle.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Spokesperson Lumka Mahajana said the State opposed Dludla’s release on bail. However, the court found that granting bail was in the interests of justice, subject to strict conditions. Dludla must report to Vanderbijlpark Police Station every Friday and is not allowed to drive any motor vehicle until the case has been finalised. He must also remain at his mother’s residence unless he receives permission from the investigating officer to stay elsewhere.He has also been warned not to interfere with witnesses. If he wants to send an apology to the families of the deceased learners, it must be done through the investigating officer.
The charges stem from a 19 January collision on the R553 Golden Highway. Dludla was allegedly transporting 17 learners when the vehicle collided head-on with an oncoming truck. 14 learners died, while 3 others were injured.The matter has been postponed to 9–17 November, when the case is scheduled to proceed to trial.The NPA said the charges against Dludla remain allegations until he is proven guilty in court.
