Murders in Orange Farm soar by 91.7%, 69 cases in just three months

According to the Gauteng Police Recorded Crime Statistics Third Quarter of the 2024-2025 Financial year, Orange Farm’s murder cases have increased by 91.7% compared to last year, with 69 murders in three months. Gauteng, overall, recorded 1, 741 murders from October 2024 to December 2024-an average of 19 murders per day.

Rape has also seen a surge with Gauteng at 2441 which is approximately 27 people being raped a day, whereas Orange Farm is at 41 Rape cases in three months. Orange farm has seen a sharp rise in crime, with violent offenses such as murder and robbery increasing.

The report highlights key trends in crime rates across the Gauteng province. In Gauteng’s top 40 stations 22 stations decreased, 0 stabilised and 18 stations indicated increases. Orange Farm recorded the highest increase, with 182 more reported contact crimes compared to the previous period.

Reported Carjacking cases in Gauteng totalled 2, 567 in three months, averaging 28 cases per day. In Orange Farm, 66 carjacking cases were reported over the same period-roughly one case per day.  

The latest crime report from Orange Farm reveals a mixed trend in criminal activities. Community-reported serious crimes have seen a significant increase, with 1,051 cases reported, marking a 25.9% rise. On the other hand, trio crimes, which typically involve car hijackings, house robberies and business robberies, have seen a 3.7% decrease, with 104 cases reported.

Stock theft, however, has decreased, with only 4 cases reported, 6 fewer than in the previous period. Kidnapping cases have also dropped by 11.6%, with 66 cases reported. Similarly, truck hijacking incidents have fallen, with 4 cases reported, 16 fewer than before.

In contrast, robbery at residential premises has seen an increase of 7 more cases, bringing the total to 31. These trends reflect a rise in serious crimes and robberies at homes, while other categories like trio crime and kidnapping have shown improvement.
