Impumelelo ECD Heritage Day celebrates culture and early childhood development

More than 600 children from 20 Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres came together in Drieziek 5, Orange Farm, for a Heritage Day celebration aimed at teaching young children about culture, identity and the importance of their roots.

Hosted by the Impumelelo ECD Association at Unique ECD on September 24, the event featured cultural performances, traditional dances, music and activities designed to encourage unity, diversity and a sense of belonging among children.

Impumelelo Forum chairperson Sebolelo Ndlovu thanked parents for supporting the initiative and entrusting ECD centres with the development of their children.

“We would like to thank the parents for trusting us with their children and for helping us make the Heritage Day celebration a success. We appreciate parents who understand the importance of ECD and give us an opportunity to teach children about where they come from and the different cultures and beliefs around them,” said Ndlovu.

She highlighted the importance of early childhood education, encouraging parents whose young children are not yet attending an ECD centre to consider enrolling them.

“The earlier, the better. The period from conception to five years is very important because this is when we can support and scaffold young minds, helping children learn, develop and begin building the skills they need to look after themselves,” she said.

The celebration was also supported by stakeholders who provided music and educational activities. Ndlovu thanked SANCA for engaging the children with age-appropriate drug-awareness messages, saying early education is particularly important in communities where children may be exposed to difficult social environments.

She also acknowledged the Music Truck for contributing to the day’s entertainment and supporting the ECD community.

“A big thank you to the Music Truck for showing that they care about our ECD centres and our children. We also appreciate all the stakeholders who helped us make the day meaningful,” Ndlovu said.

The Heritage Day gathering demonstrated how ECD centres can play a role beyond classroom learning by creating opportunities for children to experience their cultural heritage, interact with others and develop a sense of identity and belonging from an early age.
