Children from Little Angels Day Care Centre and Masibambane Day Care Centre celebrated the International Day of Play on 11 June through the launch of the Imbewu – Arts for Early Learning Project, an initiative by Struggles Theatre Productions aimed at promoting creativity and early childhood development.
The launch introduced young children to a range of arts and play-based activities, including interactive games, storytelling, movement, and creative expression. The programme seeks to make arts education more accessible in local ECD centres and primary schools while creating opportunities for community artists.
A lively marimba performance by Ratsekga Production added to the celebrations, entertaining children, educators, parents, and community members who attended the event.
According to Struggles Theatre Productions directors Nonkululeko Khoza and Nomusa Madondo, the project is designed to nurture creativity and learning from an early age.
“Through Imbewu, we are planting the seed of creativity today for a brighter tomorrow. Arts and play help children develop confidence, communication skills, imagination, and emotional growth while creating opportunities for local artists to share their talents,” they said.
The organisation currently works with seven artists supported through arts stipends from ASSITEJ South Africa and 10 young people receiving National Youth Service (NYS) stipends, who facilitate arts programmes in schools and community centres.
The launch marks the start of a year-long programme that will bring drama, music, dance, visual arts, storytelling, and creative play activities to children across Orange Farm.
Struggles Theatre Productions thanked SAAYC Orange Farm, ASSITEJ South Africa, Unlimited Smiles, Orange Farm News, educators, parents, volunteers, donors, and community stakeholders for contributing to the success of the event.
The celebration highlighted the important role that arts and play continue to play in supporting children’s development and inspiring future generations.
