The chance to see more clearly offered renewed hope to senior citizens when the Gift of the Givers Foundation donated 200 pairs of spectacles at Ext 2 Hall on 18 September.
For older residents struggling with their eyesight, spectacles can make everyday moments easier – from reading a message from a loved one to enjoying a newspaper or checking a shopping list without asking for help.
Ward 4 councillor candidate Khonzaphi Mbele expressed gratitude to the foundation for responding to the request for support.
“We called on Gift of the Givers for assistance, and they answered that call with support for our senior citizens. I am deeply grateful that they listened and responded. These spectacles are about more than clearer vision – they can help our elderly residents carry out daily tasks with confidence and greater independence. Thank you for showing our seniors that their needs matter,” said Mbele.
The donation addressed a practical need that can be difficult to prioritise when household budgets must stretch across food, transport and other essentials. For seniors who need spectacles, going without them can make even familiar tasks challenging.
Access to suitable spectacles can also help older people stay connected to family and community life, supporting activities they enjoy and tasks they prefer to manage themselves.
The handover placed senior citizens at the centre of community support, with a contribution that could make a meaningful difference in their daily lives.
