Fun walk celebrates inclusion and wellness

The streets of Wildbeefontein came alive with energy, smiles and a shared sense of purpose as community members gathered for a 5km Fun Walk hosted by Wildbeefontein Clinic in partnership with the Solly Mathe Foundation on 31 July.

Held as part of Yellow Month awareness, the event encouraged residents to embrace healthy living while promoting unity, community spirit and support for important health causes. Participants of all ages, including people living with disabilities, walked together from 8am, creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with encouragement and positivity.

Among those taking part was Felani Hemeni, who works closely with people living with disabilities. Reflecting on the experience, Hemeni said the walk was a powerful reminder that disability does not define a person’s ability.

“As someone who works with people living with disabilities, the fun walk showed me how capable people with disabilities are. The fun walk was just amazing. It reminded me that health, unity and joy go together. I feel blessed to have been part of it,” said Hemeni.

One of the organisers, Kutlwano Paledi, said the event was a heartwarming display of unity between the clinic and the community.

“It was a joyful event to see the community and the clinic coming together as one. People were educated more about health and the importance of taking good care of our bodies. It was indeed a blessed and successful day. Thank you to everyone who availed themselves and supported us,” said Paledi.

The event celebrated more than physical fitness. It highlighted the importance of creating inclusive spaces where everyone, regardless of ability, can participate, connect and feel valued. Participants walked side by side, demonstrating that a healthier community is built through togetherness, respect and mutual support.

Organisers also used the occasion to encourage residents to take charge of their health through regular physical activity while strengthening relationships within the community.

The successful initiative left many inspired, with its message of inclusion, wellness and hope resonating long after the final steps were taken. It served as a reminder that when communities come together for a common purpose, they can promote healthier lifestyles while celebrating the strength and resilience of every individual.
