An elderly woman has died following a house fire in Ext 7b, near Matiwane Combined School, on 6 July.
According to the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS), the incident was reported to its Command and Control Centre at approximately 9:39am. Firefighting crew was immediately dispatched to the scene.
When firefighters arrived, they found a single dwelling fully engulfed in flames. The blaze was successfully extinguished, but during their search of the property, firefighters discovered the body of an elderly woman inside the house. She was declared dead at the scene.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) and City of Johannesburg Fire Safety officials also attended the scene and have launched an investigation into the incident.
Authorities have confirmed that the cause of the fire has not yet been determined and remains under investigation. Officials have urged the public not to speculate until the investigation has been completed.
City of Johannesburg EMS Media and Liaison Officer, Kagiso Phasha, extended condolences to the family of the deceased while reminding residents to prioritise fire safety.
“The City of Johannesburg EMS extends its condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time. We also urge residents to remain vigilant and practise fire safety by ensuring that open flames, electrical appliances and heating devices are used responsibly,” Phasha told OFN.
