As commuters, workers and students make their way through Eyethu Mall each morning, many pause to grab a quick and affordable breakfast from entrepreneur Sfiso Madondo before heading to their destinations.
The Drieziek 4 resident walks around the area from 6am to 11am daily, selling freshly prepared breakfast sandwiches priced between R10 and R20. His offerings include sandwiches filled with eggs, cheese, polony, viennas and Russian sausages, catering to people looking for a fast and filling meal during the morning rush.
Madondo started the business after struggling to find employment and deciding to create his own source of income. Instead of waiting for opportunities, he took a practical approach by selling directly to people on the move around Eyethu Mall.
Speaking to OFN: “With unemployment being so high, I decided to start something for myself. I enjoy interacting with people and providing a service that helps them start their day.”
By moving through busy areas instead of operating from a fixed location, Madondo is able to reach a wide range of customers, especially those who do not have time to stop for breakfast. His mobile approach has helped him build a steady base of regular buyers.
Each day begins early as he prepares ingredients and gets ready for the morning rush. The consistency of his routine and the affordability of his food have contributed to the growth of his small business.
Madondo says the venture is about more than just income – it reflects his determination to remain self-reliant despite economic challenges. His work highlights how informal entrepreneurship continues to play a role in supporting livelihoods in local communities.
Customers can find Sfiso Madondo around Eyethu Mall every morning between 6:00 AM and 11:00 AM, offering fresh breakfast sandwiches at affordable prices.
