Crime in Orange Farm and beyond: Trends and positive developments

Orange Farm, like many areas in Gauteng, has experienced notable fluctuations in crime trends over the years. For the second quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year (July to September 2024), the area recorded 43 murder cases, an increase of 11 cases compared to the same period in 2023. Additionally, carjacking incidents continue to plague the community, contributing to the broader challenges faced across the province.

Truck hijackings in Gauteng during this period were recorded at 459 incidents, a decrease of 83 cases compared to 2023, showcasing progress in combating this particular crime.

Gauteng remains one of South Africa’s crime hotspots, contributing 26.6% to the country’s reported contact crimes. The province recorded 1,682 cases of attempted murder and 2,702 sexual offences, showing minor fluctuations compared to the previous year. Neighboring areas such as Lenasia, De Deur, Ennerdale, and Lenasia South also face challenges with both violent and property-related crimes.

For instance:

  • Lenasia and Lenasia South saw spikes in vehicle-related crimes, including theft and hijackings.
  • De Deur recorded a mixed trend, with slight reductions in house break-ins but persistent issues with violent crimes such as assault.
  • Ennerdale witnessed an increase in common robbery cases.

Across South Africa, contact crimes showed a slight overall decrease (-3%), with 160,935 cases reported. Carjackings were down by 9.4%, with 5,447 incidents recorded nationwide, while truck hijackings saw a 15.3% decrease, standing at 459 cases. These reductions indicate progress in targeted policing efforts.

However, property-related crimes such as burglary at residential premises (34,631 cases, down 9.2%) and theft out of motor vehicles (20,820 cases, down 8.9%) remain significant issues.

One of the notable positives during this period was the increase in police action leading to the confiscation of illegal firearms. A total of 4,325 cases of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition were recorded, marking an 8.6% increase compared to 2023. This proactive approach has undoubtedly contributed to reducing the potential for violent crimes in many communities.

While Orange Farm and its neighboring areas continue to grapple with high crime levels, the concerted efforts by law enforcement agencies to curb specific crimes, such as carjacking and illegal firearm possession, show promise. Sustained community involvement, alongside robust policing, will be crucial in ensuring a safer environment for all.

Residents are encouraged to report crimes promptly and participate in community policing forums to foster collaboration between the police and the community.
