The spirit of Nelson Mandela Day came alive as senior citizens were honoured during a day of sport, entertainment and community service hosted by loveLife in partnership with Raising Champions NPO.
Held at the loveLife Y Centre in Orange Farm Extension 6A on 18 July, the celebration brought together elderly residents, community organisations, political representatives and young people for a day dedicated to recognising the contribution of older persons while promoting healthy and active ageing.
The programme featured a soccer tournament, netball, health awareness activities, games, music, dance performances and refreshments. Young people also spent time interacting with the elderly, creating a joyful atmosphere that reflected the true meaning of Mandela Day’s 67 minutes of service.
Raising Champions Director Mmalerato Rabotapi said community support played an important role in making the event a success.
“Three weeks ago, Kenny Kunene and members of the Patriotic Alliance donated soccer boots, trophies, medals and cash prizes for our elderly participants. We also involved children in entertaining and spending time with them to make the celebration even more special,” said Rabotapi.
ActionSA Ward 4 candidate Pule Motloung said his team joined the initiative after receiving a request from the local football association.
“I received a call from the LFA secretary, Mr Mokwena, asking ActionSA to assist loveLife as they were hosting a 67 Minutes for Mandela Day event. We were happy to step in and help wherever we could,“ said Motloung.
Patriotic Alliance Ward 5 councillor candidate Neo Marumo said the tournament celebrated unity, active ageing and community spirit while recognising the dedication of senior football players.
“The tournament showed that football can bring generations together, encourage healthy living and strengthen our communities,“ said Marumo.
The celebration ended with smiles, laughter and renewed appreciation for the elderly, highlighting how partnerships between community organisations, volunteers and local stakeholders can make a meaningful difference while keeping Nelson Mandela’s legacy of service alive.
