In 2022, passionate educator Thato Mofokeng founded Aim for Stars Learning Academy, an after-school programme dedicated to helping learners improve in subjects like Maths, Home Language, Commerce, Science and English.
Based at Ext 6A Y-Centre, the programme caters to learners from Grade 2 to 11, offering extra classes to boost their academic performance.
A former teacher and librarian, Mofokeng understands the struggles many learners face. Speaking to Orange Farm News, he said: “I want learners to believe in themselves and know they can achieve anything. Aim for Stars is not just about passing subjects but about building good character, leadership and life skills.”
One of the academy’s standout features is its mentorship programme, which pairs learners with mentors who provide guidance and support. This initiative has helped boost students’ confidence, motivation and overall success.
Mofokeng revealed that he started the programme using his own money and has since assisted over 50 families. The academy has also awarded over 10 learners free scholarships and played a role in helping Thabang Liefo secure an academy contract in soccer.
Despite its success, Aim for Stars faces challenges, including limited resources and space to accommodate more students.
