A 22-year-old male suspect was arrested after being found in possession of a deadly M75 military hand grenade, an illegal firearm and live ammunition.

The arrest followed a tip-off received by police from a reliable source, alerting authorities to the presence of illegal explosives in Ext 3. Responding swiftly, a coordinated operation was carried out by multiple SAPS units, including the Bomb Disposal Unit, K9 Unit, Forensic Services and Crime Prevention officers from various police stations. Upon arrival, the suspect was found in possession of the military-grade hand grenade, a firearm and ammunition. He was arrested on the scene without incident.

Brigadier MJ Manamela, station commander of Orange Farm SAPS, commended the team effort: “The dedication and professionalism displayed by our members ensured that the hand grenade was secured safely and did not detonate. Their teamwork saved lives.”

Adding to the statement, Sergeant SJ Motsapi, Orange Farm SAPS communications officer, emphasized the importance of community cooperation: “This arrest highlights the success we can achieve when the community works together with police. We urge residents to continue reporting suspicious activity- every tip helps us make Orange Farm safer for all.”

Brigadier Manamela further noted the ongoing issue of illegal firearms in the area, stating: “These weapons are frequently used in violent crimes, including murders. Anyone found in possession of illegal arms will face the full might of the law.”

The suspect is expected to appear in the Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court soon, facing charges of possession of illegal explosives, a firearm and live ammunition.
