Hard work and passion have paid off for Xolani Mpisane, a dedicated Mathematics teacher from Jabulile Secondary School, who helped his school secure Position 1 in the Johannesburg South District for the 2024 National Senior Certificate Mathematics results in Quintile 1-3 schools.
Mpisane (31), who hails from Ext 1 (eMshengu), developed a love for Maths back in high school when he saw his classmates struggling. “It was heartbreaking to see them battle with the subject, so I would stay behind after school to help. That’s when I knew I wanted to teach Maths,” he said.
Though he initially pursued a BSc in Hydrology, which he completed in 2016, his passion for teaching never faded. In 2018, he went back to university to obtain a Postgraduate Certificate in Education, believing that “one’s dream does not die while they are still alive.”His teaching philosophy is rooted in behaviourism, where rewards motivate learners to perform better.
“I encourage critical thinking and problem-solving, using real-world examples rather than just memorising formulas,” he explained.
The prestigious District Award was accepted on behalf of Jabulile Secondary by the school principal, Mr Buthelezi and the SGB chairperson at a ceremony held at John Orr on 31 January.
“It is an honour and privilege to be recognised for the hard work throughout 2024,” Mpisane said.
Mpisane added: “The early mornings, late nights and Sunday special Maths sessions were all worth it. This achievement wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of my learners, the support of parents, school staff, district officials, my family and friends. One of the biggest challenges in teaching Maths is learners’ fear of the subject. Many think they are not good enough. But I always tell them-nothing is difficult with practice, practice, and more practice.”
Jabulile Secondary’s principal, Mr Buthelezi, praised Mpisane’s efforts: “Winning Position 1 in the whole district has changed perceptions about Maths. It proves that success in the subject is achievable. I encourage parents to enrol their children here, where dedicated educators like Mr Mpisane put learners first. His love for Maths and his commitment to our students is unmatched- he has put our school on the map we are very proud of his accomplishments.”
