On 1 December, the Orange Farm community came together in a spectacular celebration of culture, health and unity at the Orange Farm Carnival 2024.
Organised by the Nkosana Ngobese Foundation in partnership with the Stretford CHC Clinic, the event commemorated World AIDS Day and supported the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
Under the theme “The Revival of Ubuntu,” the carnival was a vibrant showcase of artistic expression and community spirit. Processions began early in the day, with participants assembling at two starting points before converging at the Orange Farm Multipurpose Centre.
The streets were alive with colour and joy as residents joined in, celebrating a shared heritage through dance, music and theatrical performances. A key highlight of the day was the Puppet Street Theatre, featuring giant puppets and indigenous music that told powerful stories of liberation and resilience.
Traditional dancers, drummers and live performers added to the festive atmosphere, celebrating the rich cultural diversity of Orange Farm.The carnival also promoted health and social awareness, offering free HIV and TB testing, health screenings and educational resources on gender-based violence.
Local artists and vendors had the opportunity to showcase their crafts, creating economic opportunities while fostering pride in community talent. The event, attended by thousands, included provisions for children, the elderly and persons with disabilities, ensuring that everyone could participate and enjoy the day.
By blending entertainment with important social messages, the Orange Farm Carnival reinforced the spirit of Ubuntu and left a lasting legacy of togetherness and empowerment.
