Three book lovers, Sihle Gaba, Nobuhle Nkambule and Dumezweni Ndweni, have launched the Abantu Literacy League, a library aimed at encouraging youth to read and improving literacy levels in their community.
Located in Drieziek 3, the library invites young people to visit and utilize its resources and asks those with unneeded books to donate them.
The Abantu Literacy League seeks to offer more than just reading; it aims to provide insightful and empowering experiences. The initiative targets children from primary to high school levels who face challenges in reading and writing.
By launching this project, the founders hope to positively impact these learners’ lives. The trio plans to have the library services running by 16 June, Youth Day.
“In this epoch, it is not enough to simply point out the problems and challenges. We also need to be part of the solutions and bring about the change that we want to see,” said Ndweni.
Currently, the organization consists of only Gaba, Nkambule and Ndweni, but they are open to additional help and ideas.
Nkambule explained her motivation: “I was concerned to see many children can’t spell, which fueled my mission to start a book club. Now, this library project gives me an opportunity to change children’s lives.”
Gaba added: “I want to serve and be part of something bigger than myself. I want to free minds in my community. I feel like it is my purpose to serve.”
In the near future, the Abantu Literacy League plans to offer a library, homework center and internet services. Long-term goals include creating book clubs, debates, spelling, art and writing competitions for children.
The organization also plans to involve elderly people in literacy programs, including basic computer and language skills. They aim to register as an NPO by 2025.
The project is seeking donations of books, magazines, and newspapers from any genre and field.
