Drieziek1’s Makaphiliswe Non-profit Organisation founded by Phiwe Qalapa who later joined forces with the Gauteng Department of Agriculture aims to combat poverty by providing support to Drieziek and Orange Farm residents to start home food gardens.

Qalapa told Orange Farm News: “At the moment we have 120 members and we aim to reach 1 000 homes by the end of the year. People are struggling when there is land where can grow and put food on the table.”
Earlier this month, the Gauteng Department of Agriculture held a three-day agriculture training workshop to 45 participants in Orange Farm. The trainees who signed consent forms that were submitted to the Gauteng Department of Agriculture’s Assistance Practitioner Gabriel Baloyi will soon receive free garden tools and seeds to enable them to start their own gardens.
Makaphiliswe NPO will monitor the food gardens for six months.
