Juniour Mafoko, popularly known as Don Poke, is preparing to release his latest single, “Locust”, on 20 October, as he continues to build his music career through a unique sound he calls “storytelling trap”.
Unlike conventional trap music, Don Poke uses his lyrics to share real-life experiences, personal struggles and ambitions, creating music that listeners can relate to.
His journey has not been without challenges. As an independent artist, securing bookings and gaining recognition without the backing of a major record label remains difficult. However, his passion for music continues to motivate him.
Working from his backroom studio, Don Poke has collaborated with several artists, including Thulani An Artist, PK Khumalo, Savage Wrld RSA and Legend V, as he works towards establishing himself in the South African music industry.
His upcoming single, “Locust”, features production by Blessing Nyoni, also known as Beats By Bless, while Don Poke handled the mixing and mastering himself.
The artist also revealed that he is working on a major collaboration, although further details have not yet been disclosed.
Determined to grow beyond his current audience, Don Poke hopes to take his music across South Africa and eventually reach international listeners.
“My goal is to take my sound from my back room studio to the rest of South Africa and the world,” he said.
Looking ahead, the ambitious musician hopes to become a household name in South African hip-hop within the next five years while inspiring other independent artists to pursue their dreams.
He also encouraged young people not to give up despite the challenges they may face.
“To the youth, keep pushing, your story matters. To everyone supporting me, thank you – more music is coming,” he said.
With “Locust” scheduled for release on Tuesday, October 20, Don Poke hopes his latest offering will introduce more listeners to his storytelling approach to trap music and mark another step towards achieving his musical ambitions.
