For Qabang Mashinini, better known by his stage name Qabzin The RapperSA, hip-hop is a way of turning everyday experiences into lyrics that listeners can recognise and relate to.
The Ext 7b artist is developing his sound around sharp flows, raw lyricism and street storytelling, drawing inspiration from the realities and experiences surrounding him.
Rather than relying on trends to define his music, Qabzin is focused on rapping and using his lyrics to communicate stories in an authentic way. His approach places emphasis on bars, delivery and the message behind the music.
Growing up in Orange Farm has also given him a community and environment from which to draw inspiration. Through his music, he hopes to give listeners a glimpse into experiences that are often familiar to young people living in township communities.
“Every verse I write carries a piece of where I come from. I want someone listening to my music to hear the hunger, the struggles and the ambition behind it. I’m not trying to sound like everybody else – I want to build a sound that people will recognise as Qabzin,” said Mashinini.
As an emerging artist, establishing an individual identity is important to him. Qabzin wants his name to become associated with lyrical ability and honest storytelling rather than simply following what is popular at the time.
His journey comes at a time when independent artists can use performances and digital platforms to introduce their music to audiences without waiting for traditional industry opportunities.
For Qabzin, however, growing as an artist is about more than visibility. Developing his writing, strengthening his delivery and remaining consistent are all part of building the foundation for the career he wants.
