Vutomi High School hosted a vibrant and informative career summit on Thursday, 30 April, aimed at helping learners make better decisions about their futures.
The event brought together professionals from a range of fields, including technology, business, engineering, healthcare and education. They shared practical insights on their careers and engaged directly with learners through talks and question-and-answer sessions.
The summit created a space for learners to explore different career paths and better understand the skills, qualifications and commitment needed to succeed.
Event co-ordinator and Vutomi teacher Cuthbert Marufu said many learners struggle with decision-making and often choose careers that do not match their interests.
“Many students have a problem with decision-making and end up choosing the wrong careers,” he said. “I studied general subjects in high school. I did well, but it was not something I was passionate about. I do not want these learners to make the same mistake.”
Marufu said the event was organised with support from ward 4 councillor Simon Molefe and members of the local community.
He stressed the importance of early career guidance, encouraging learners to think beyond their current circumstances.
“We want our students to realise there are many opportunities available to them if they stay focused and work hard,” he said.
Teachers welcomed the initiative, saying events like this are important for broadening learners’ horizons and inspiring them to pursue their goals.
Sizwe Marajane, a youth coach guide from the Basic Package of Support (BPS), said their organisation helps young people shape their career paths through one-on-one sessions.
“We reintroduce young people to themselves, their capabilities, strengths and weaknesses,” he said. “From there, we assess how far they are from achieving their goals and guide them accordingly.”
Beyond sharing information, the summit helped build learners’ confidence and motivation to pursue meaningful careers.
Events like these play an important role in developing informed, ambitious young people who are better prepared to contribute positively to their communities.
