Orange Farm’s David wins bronze in first Intonga Indigenous Games

Ext 4’s David Ralebea claimed the bronze medal in the senior males category at the Provincial Indigenous Games for Intonga stick fighting, held at Eersterust Stadium in Pretoria on 24–26 September.

Proud of his accomplishment in his first tournament, Ralebea shared his excitement with Orange Farm News, stating: “I was thrilled to participate in such a cultural sport for the first time. This win means a lot because it shows me where my capabilities lie within sports entertainment.”

Ralebea’s journey with stick fighting began at age 15, drawn by the sport’s deep cultural roots.

“Stick fighting is more than a sport; it’s a part of who we are. Competing on this level was an incredible experience,” he said.

Representing Orange Farm, Ralebea’s performance highlighted the community’s talent and passion for indigenous sports.

Intonga stick fighting, one of South Africa’s oldest traditional sports, has a long history as a rite of passage in Xhosa culture. Competitors are equipped with two sticks and head and hand protection, strictly following the rules of the game. Among these rules is the penalty for Kumhlaba Wamadoda-striking in the “Land of Men” or below the belt, which is strictly prohibited.

Today, Intonga tournaments continue to celebrate and preserve this cultural heritage, providing a platform for athletes like Ralebea to showcase their skills and contribute to the legacy of indigenous South African sports.
