Generous stationery donation boosts Drieziek 3’s Abantu Literacy League
The Abantu Literacy League in Drieziek 3 recently received a vital donation of reading books, exercise books, stationery, puzzles and teaching aids from Bafana Nhlapo.
This contribution is set to enhance both adult and children’s literacy in the community. Abantu Literacy League was established by Sihle Gaba, Nobuhle Nkambule and Dumezweni Ndweni. Their goal is to encourage youth to embrace reading and improve literacy levels in their area. The library, which serves as the heart of this mission, invites young people to make use of its resources and encourages those with spare books to donate them.
Overflowing with joy and gratitude, Ndweni said: “We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to Bafana Nhlapo for supporting our cause and taking it to places and people we couldn’t reach alone. His belief in our story and willingness to make it his own means the world to us. These donations will make our challenging work much easier, especially in a low-income area where books and stationery are costly.”
Ndweni added that the outpouring of support from people across various backgrounds has been overwhelming.
“Their contributions have validated our dreams and vision,” he added.
Bafana Nhlapo, who grew up in Orange Farm and now holds a senior position at Amazon, was moved to act after hearing about the initiative on Newzroom Afrika. As an activist, he was inspired by the founders’ dedication to addressing the literacy challenge in their community.
Nhlapo used his social media presence to gather donations, ultimately collecting 91 books, stationery and puzzles. With additional monetary contributions, the league plans to improve its infrastructure.
