Rising hijacking threats: SAPS urges motorists to stay vigilant
SAPS Sgt Shaan Motsapi, is warning motorists about the increasing threat of car and truck hijackings.
Awareness is focused on hijackings occurring on the N1 and R28, including Randfontein Road via Poortjie. Motorists should be especially cautious during both weekdays and weekends.
Hijackings have become a significant issue, with criminals often targeting drivers in both urban and rural areas. These incidents can be violent, and perpetrators are increasingly using sophisticated methods to deceive and ambush their victims.
Key precautions include:
– Avoid giving lifts to hikers along the N1, particularly from Grasmere Toll Gate Plaza to Vaal Plaza Toll Gate.
– Do not stop for unknown vehicles or individuals warning about flat tires.
“I have been running this awareness campaign on local media to urge motorists to be cautious on the roads as hijackings are on the rise. It is important to take note of hot spots and know what to do to avoid being hijacked. The awareness is very important and shouldn’t be ignored. Stay alert and help reduce the risk of hijackings,” said Orange Farm SAPS communication officer Sgt Shaan Motsapi.
