Former Tshwane mayor granted R10 000 bail after handing himself over to the Hawks

Dr Murunwa Makwarela, had handed himself over to the Hawks facing a fraud charge in relation to over R1.5 Million that he earned from the city since his appointment as a Councillor from November 2021 to March 2022 after he failed to declare his insolvency.

Today he appeared before the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court and was granted bail. Makwarela is also facing a charge of producing a fake clearance certificate last month in a bid to stay as mayor. Makwarela will appear again in court on 2 May.
