Ext 6’s Morena uses cinema to empower Orange Farm youth

Orange Farm Ext 6a’s Morena Mofokeng – a Sunshine Cinema ambassador and graduate – travels around schools, organisations and more to share knowledge with the youth using films, hoping to spark conversation, educate, inspire social change and most importantly, combat unemployment.

Morena (25) uses a mobile cinema kit known as a “sunbox” which has a portable solar panel, projector, battery, blackouts, a white sheet, and a USB that is loaded with African films. He works with assistants skilled in social media marketing, catering, film setup, administration and more. A learner who frequents Morena’s screenings, Kamogelo Morake, said he has learnt a lot and developed as a storyteller. “Sunshine Cinema is part of our lives emotionally because its films are related to the social issues we encounter as teenagers,” he said.

Morena told OFN: “It is known that cinemas are just for entertainment – going out to watch the film and going back home – but, Sunshine Cinema is more than that. It’s about giving our youth a voice and helping them heal from whatever situations they have been through or are in.”
